Would You Glow For Some Sushi?

In a today's article "", New A Little Sushi For DinnerYorkers are quite cavalier about lab results showing that tuna samples from 5 New York sushi restaurants - Gourmet Garage, Nobu Next Door, Sushi Seki, Sushi of Gari and Blue Ribbon Sushi - all had  unusually high levels of mercury.  Some of the people quoted chose non-tuna items, some chose tuna anyway and Roberta Berman of Staten Island was reported to have shrugged and said :

“If I become iridescent from it, I become iridescent from it.” She added. “I’ll glow in the dark.”

What would you do if the craving for sushi hit?

Space for Notes or Out of Town Restaurants?

You know we are finishing the new edition of .  It looks great and it's informative, funny and tempts you with tasty dishes.  As Fin said, "When I was proofreading this, my mouth started to water."Notes

However, I have an interesting situation which has arisen.  In our constant attempts to keep costs down we are actually going to have a couple more pages than we strictly need, even with the couple of extras we are throwing in for you this time. (I know, it seems backwards, but trust me more pages=cheaper book.)

That means, we have to decide what to do with these extra pages.

Should we:

  • leave them blank for you to take notes, doodle or make paper airplanes?
  • give you some blank restaurant forms, so you can include your new finds, restaurant ratings and suggested dishes?
  • give you a sampling of ?

I figured there was no one better to ask than you.

What would you like?

Can I Quote You?

Hi guys,

totally unhelpfulWe're in the final throws of work on the new edition of and will have the book in bookstores by the end of January (probably available to you even sooner than that!)

But right now I need 2 or 3 quotes for the back cover of the book from people who'd be okay with their name being on there.

Sure we could get one from a CheapEats celeb, but I'd rather have quotes from people who use the book on a regular basis.

Want to send us a quick "testimonial"? Or tell us a story of how you use the book?

Thanks in advance!

Shawarma Debate - Chicken or Beef?

In What's on Your Must Try List? a little back and forth has started on the topic of this city's sandwich of choice, the shawarma.

Vovici Online Survey Software

Dave said: It may be a bit of an Ottawa cliche, but a beef sandwich from Shawarma Palace is unmatched in this city, if you ask me.

And

countered: Never tried the beef, but Shawarma Palace's chicken sandwich is the best I've had in three cities. If this were my list, I'd add it.

Sounds like there is a taste-off in the making.

What do you think - Chicken or Beef?

What's on Your Must Try List?

As part of the next edition of **, and for the blog, we are compiling a list of the 100 Must Try Dishes in Ottawa, (all Cheap Eats of course) and we have reserved 20 spots on the list for your recommendations.

We've already built the list to 80 dishes - from things every Ottawan should have tried (like The Work's Tower or Rings) to more exotic dishes that prove you are a serious culinary adventurer (like fried Quay Teow from Chahaya Malaysia).

But to make sure we aren't missing a thing, we wanted to invite you to have your voice heard on what you think the Must Try dishes in Ottawa are.

What do you think should be on the list?

What things do you think visitors to Ottawa should not miss?

Do you think you are only a real Ottawan if you have had hot beaver tail while skating on the canal?

Is there something you order just to see if your friends will try it, and if they don't, you'll eat it because it's so damned good?

We'd love to hear about it!  Add your "Must Try" dishes to the below or email them to lex [at] cheapeatsottawa [dot] com.

Some other items already on the list include a Mello's breakfast special (preferably at 4am), Laksa from Singapore Restaurant, dim sum at Mandarin Ogilvie,  , and Escargot Forestière from Pizza’za.

** BTW - We're down to the short strokes for getting the next edition of Cheap Eats Ottawa finished and to the printers and it looks like it'll be in bookstores in January.  More on that soon!

Facebook Takes Ottawa Restaurant Fandom to a new level

The biggest fan group is for: DiRienzo's = Best Sandwiches in Ottawa (1,772 members). But even with 1,772 fans, some still want to change things up: De Rienzo's rocks my socks!...but could use an outdoor eating area. (39 members)

Though they certainly aren't the only Italian Sandwich spot with fans showing their facebook love:  Bottega Boys [2.0] (57 members)

Another big hit: Maroush Int'l Shawarma (577 members), seems to have a few customers happy to admit they are on the naughty list: Marroush International Shawarma - NO SHAWARMA FOR YOU!!! (79 members)

Bagels in a Bin, another spot with a vocal fan base, shows some solid numbers: Kettleman's Bagel (382 members)

Then there's the .  I'm not surprised to find a fan group for them, but I'm a little surprised by the numbers: Elgin Street Diner (13 years iof success)  (71 members).  Perhaps this is staff-only like their sister group for The Diner (19 members).  (Which, btw, includes a great description of The Diner "The Elgin Street Diner's younger, more attractive, less slutty, sister restaurant.")

SuperEx Treats

SuperEx Candy Apples

I'm already hearing tales of people hitting the to ride the Polar Express and fill up on fries and cotton candy. And hasemeister obviously got distracted by the Candy Apples. But, sadly, I'm going to have to miss it this year because I'm out of town.

Maybe you'll help me live vicariously through your taste buds and childhood (or second childhood) memories by telling me about your favourite Treats?

Vovici Online Survey Software

(I tried to reach the SuperEx organisers to get a list of this year's Food Vendors, but they didn't reply.  So if I'm missing your favourite treat, just tell me in the comments below and I'll get it added to the poll)

Secret Foods of Summer

Call MeWhat's your summer food secret? That one thing that gives you a little summertime thrill every time you bite into it?

Is it the first strawberry?  A hot Beavertail dripping with lemon and sugar? Your first bubble tea of the season?

Maybe a crepe on a patio in Hull? Chip Truck chips? Or ripping open a fresh baguette and spreading on peppercorn pate while sitting on the grass at the NAC listening to a lunchtime concert?

I've had a crappy week and want to hear some fun secrets. Please?
