Red Pen Updates

Red Pen Update: Nagina

Red Pen UpdateThis is courtesy of Marcia who dropped me the following note this morning about Nagina ( pg. 72)

This is to let you know that Nagina at 217 Rideau, which is in your guide, is no longer. Last year it closed and then opened up under new management as Bombay Fine Dining.

It had a wonderful buffet, with lots of choice, including several vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Then, not long after, it closed again and reopened under the name . My understanding is that one of the "Bombay" chefs bought out the owners.

Unfortunately, it reopened during the transit strike and business was badly affected. Right now has the buffet only at noon on weekdays (cost is $11) and features the a la carte menu the rest of the time.

I have eaten there a couple of times, as I did when it was the Bombay. My a la carte dishes were good, but not I think up to the Bombay standard. I will be sampling the buffet with friends later this week. From what I was told, the owners had to cut back their offerings because business was so badly affected during the strike.

Thanks for the heads up Marcia!  Please let us know what you think of the buffet.

Red Pen Update

Yes, it's time to grab your red pen and make those first couple of marks in your brand new copy of .

It happens every single time we launch a new book, one CheapEat restaurant closes before the book hits bookstore shelves. Though this time, there were 2 casualties.   It's always a surprise, especially since we've been on the phone with the restaurant immediately before going to print, but it still happens every time.

FuschianFirst and pretty surprisingly, Cam Kong is gone.  We dropped in for lunch the day after the launch and found that 726 Somerset is now Fuschian. Thanks to for the heads up and feedback on the new location - his comment here

Red Pen: pg. 37 of , Cam Kong - closed.  (pg. 23 if you're still working from the first edition.)

Mr. Pho?Secondly, as we were about to drop off their "Yay, you're in CheapEats" letter, we found that Shawarma King on Elgin is now Mr. Pho Fusion serving "Noodle Soup - Pad Thai - Shawarma".  Yes, you read that right.  Not sure if the ownership has changed since the phone number on the sign is the same.  Which do you think would be more interesting - Vietnamese Shawarma or Middle Eastern Pho?

Red Pen: pg. 89 of , Shawarma King on Elgin - closed or at least changed drastically.

Let us know here if you've found any .
